A line that falls and rises repeatedly, each low point higher than the last. the first time down and this one, higher

Two · On relapse

You started again.

And you have already decided what that means about you.

Give this four minutes before you decide anything else.

What follows is a passage from Savitri. It is not about opium. It is about what happens to anybody who climbs. And it sets down, in order, what happened to you, including the part you have never been able to explain to another person.

We are not going to tell you it does not matter. It matters.

We are going to tell you it is not the verdict you think it is.

Only awhile at first these heavenlier states,
These large wide-poised upliftings could endure.
The high and luminous tension breaks too soon,
The body's stone stillness and the life's hushed trance,
The breathless might and calm of silent mind;
Or slowly they fail as sets a golden day.

Everybody who stops describes the same first weeks. The body goes quiet. The mind clears in a way you had forgotten was possible. You sleep. Food has taste again. Somebody tells you your eyes look different and they are right.

And then it does not hold.

The passage gives it two ways of going, and the second is the one nobody warns you about. Sometimes the tension breaks. But sometimes it fails slowly, as sets a golden day. Nothing dramatic happens. There is no terrible hour you could point to afterwards. The light goes down an inch a day for weeks, and one evening you look up and it is dark and you cannot say when it happened.

If that is how yours went, you have probably been searching for the moment you failed. There isn't one. That is not evasion. It is in the line.

The restless nether members tire of peace;

Read it twice.

It is not you who tired of peace.

The nether members. The lower parts. The machinery underneath. The grooves that twenty years of use cut into a body, that run below the level where a person decides anything, and that were never once consulted about any of this.

You have spent months being told you are weak, and then repeating it to yourself in your own voice, which is worse, because you believe your own voice.

The line says something else. There is a part of you that never wanted the peace.

A part. Not the whole.

The whole of you is the thing reading this and hurting.

A nostalgia of old little works and joys,
A need to call back small familiar selves,
To tread the accustomed and inferior way,
The need to rest in a natural pose of fall,

Nostalgia. Not desperation. Nostalgia.

This is the part no clinic explains and every person who has gone back recognises at once. You did not return because craving overpowered you in one unbearable hour. Sometimes it happens that way. Mostly it does not.

You went back because you missed him.

The old self. The small familiar one. He was not a good man, and he was killing you, and you missed him anyway, the way a person misses a bad friend who was at least there for years.

And then the last line: the need to rest in a natural pose of fall. A body that has held itself upright for months eventually wants to sit down. That is not sin. That is fatigue, and fatigue is not a defect of character.

Two men sitting on a bench in a sunlit courtyard. One rests a hand on the other's shoulder and speaks quietly to him. A third stands close by, listening.
Nobody is being rescued here. Somebody is simply not leaving.

As a child who learns to walk can walk not long,

A child learning to walk falls over. Every child. Many times a day, for months.

Nobody has ever stood over a falling child and said: he has failed at walking. He is not serious about it. He should be ashamed of himself. He had his chance and he wasted it.

Nobody has ever said that, because every person alive understands, without being taught, that falling is not the opposite of learning to walk.

Falling is how walking is learned.

You fell over. You are learning to walk. Those are not two sentences. They are one.

An old pull of subconscious cords renews;
It draws the unwilling spirit from the heights,
Or a dull gravitation drags us down
To the blind driven inertia of our base.

The unwilling spirit.

Look at what the line says is happening. An old pull. Subconscious cords. Something laid down beneath the level where anything is chosen, drawing a spirit that does not consent to it.

Unwilling. Your will was not on that side. Your will was being dragged.

And notice what the passage reaches for as the comparison. Not a demon. Not a temptation. Not a test you were set and failed.

A dull gravitation. Gravity. The thing that pulls everything downward, all the time, without any malice whatsoever, because that is simply what it does.

Nobody is blamed for having weight.

This too the supreme Diplomat can use,
He makes our fall a means for greater rise.

The word is Diplomat.

Not King. Not Judge. Not Master.

A diplomat does not open by telling the other side what it ought to have been. He begins with what is actually in front of him and works from there. His patience goes past all reason. He does not walk out of the room. He comes back tomorrow, and the day after.

And look at what is claimed. Not that the fall is forgiven, which would leave it sitting there as a debt against you. That it is used. That it becomes material. That the thing you are most ashamed of is turned into the means of something that could not have been reached any other way.

The one who has gone down and come back knows that road in a way the one who never fell never will. That is not a consolation prize. On this website it is the entire qualification.

Everything we do rests on those two lines. The whole idea is here if you want it argued properly.

For into ignorant Nature's gusty field,
Into the half-ordered chaos of mortal life
The formless Power, the Self of eternal light
Follow in the shadow of the spirit's descent;
The twin duality for ever one
Chooses its home mid the tumults of the sense.

This part is for the guilt, so read it slowly.

When you went back, you believed you had fallen away from something. That whatever had been with you in those clear weeks saw what you did, turned around, and left. That you were now alone in a way you had not been alone before.

Read it again.

The light follows. It goes down with you. Into the gusty field. Into the half-ordered chaos. It is not standing at the top with its arms folded, waiting for you to climb all the way back and apologise before it will speak to you again.

And then the line that takes the whole architecture of shame apart: it chooses its home in the tumult. Not above the mess. Not once the mess has been cleared up. In it.

You were not abandoned in that room. Whatever you want to call it, and you do not have to call it anything, it came down the stairs with you.

He comes unseen into our darker parts
And, curtained by the darkness, does his work,
A subtle and all-knowing guest and guide,
Till they too feel the need and will to change.

Curtained by the darkness, does his work.

Something was being done in the months you have written off as wasted. You could not see it, and you were not meant to, because that is the nature of it. It is curtained. It does not report its progress to you.

And now the last line, which is the actual promise, and it is not the promise anybody expects.

Not: until you grow strong enough to hold them down.
Not: until you learn to fight them off every morning for the rest of your life.

Till they too feel the need and will to change.

The part of you that wants it is going to change. Not be beaten. Not be sat on. Changed. One day the thing in you that reaches for the substance will reach for something else, and you will not be holding a lid down on anything, because there will be nothing left under the lid.

That is the difference between not using and being free. One is a man sitting on a box for the rest of his life. The other is the box quietly becoming empty.

If this is today

Reading is not enough on the day itself. So here is something to do with the next ten minutes. Not because it fixes anything. Because a body in this state needs one small instruction it can actually follow.

Sit down and breathe with us

And if today is worse than that, stop reading and call 14446. It is free, it runs all night, and the person answering will not be shocked by anything you tell them.

And if you are reading this because of somebody else

You have run out of hope, not patience.

People will tell you to be patient. That is not what has gone. You have been patient for years. What has run out is the belief that it will ever be different, and nobody can be talked back into that.

So do not try to feel hopeful. Try something smaller and more accurate.

Read the passage above again, but read it as a description of what is physically happening inside a person you know. The old pull. The unwilling spirit. The dull gravitation. Then ask yourself honestly whether the person you are angry with and the person who did this are the same person.

The one who fell is also the one who is ashamed of falling. Both are in there, in the same body, right now. And that shame, unbearable to watch and heavier still to carry, is the proof that the whole of them did not agree to it.

You do not have to trust them yet. You are allowed to protect yourself. But you can stop believing they are worthless while you wait.

Those are two different things, and only one of them costs you anything.

Inside a bright room, a younger man walks out with his arm around the shoulders of an older man in a white turban. Others nearby are smiling.
Not a celebration. An ordinary morning, walked out of together.
The passage, whole

Read it now without us talking over it.

Savitri · Sri Aurobindo · Book One

Nothing on this page asks you to believe anything. Read the word Divine as you like, or pass over it and read the rest, and the rest still stands: that what is in you was always there, that the years were paid and not wasted, and that falling is how walking is learned.

The fall is in the passage. So is everything that comes after it.

This section will grow. Savitri holds a line for most of what happens in this work, and they will be added here as they are needed. If there is something you are going through and you would like us to look for it, write to us.
