The idea beneath the practice

Becoming Jyotirgana

Why we stopped treating people as patients and started training them as protectors.

The village

A village sits down.

This wing is for somebody with no office at all. The neighbour, the shopkeeper, the teacher, the four men under the same tree. They are the people who actually run a village, and nothing in this field has ever been written for them.

Every door here opens three times

The lane · The village · The area
The lanewhat can be done from your own door
The villagethe whole settlement, and where it gathers
The areapast your own boundary: the next village, the market
A village does not change its mind. A village sits down.

Five hundred and fifteen studies, more than two hundred and fifty thousand people, thirty eight countries: contact between groups reduces prejudice, and it does so even where the ideal conditions are absent. Those conditions are equal standing, a shared task, working together rather than in competition, and the backing of whoever the place respects. A village's ten minutes meets all four by accident, costs nothing, and needs nobody from outside. Speeches and posters meet none of them.

The doors of लोकलाज

01What the village says, and why

The largest obstacle in this subject is not the drug and it is not money. It is what people will say. And what a village says, it does not say out of malice. It says it because nobody has ever given it a second sentence.

02Which doors it actually closes

What people will say is not a feeling. It is a door that closes, and then another, and then a third. This door names them one by one, because a thing that has a name can be moved.

03And a second sentence

A village has one sentence available to it today, and it is about character. Nobody has given it a second. This door is that second sentence, and it is short enough to be said standing in a lane.

The doors of बैठक

01A village does not change its mind, a village sits down

The largest study in social psychology is about exactly this, and its result is one thing: distance does not fall through talk, it falls through doing something alongside. And the four conditions that make it work best are all met, by accident, in a village's ten minutes.

02The ground, and the hour

There is nothing philosophical in this door. Which ground, which hour, who opens it, how long, how the old and the women will come, and what will not be said on that ground.

03The ones who come first

Fifty people are not needed. Five are enough, and who those five will be comes out much the same in almost every village. And the man all of this is for will come last of all, and that is right.

The doors of इंतज़ाम

01What the village already has

Nothing new has to be built for this. Almost everything needed is already in the village: the people, the ground, and money that arrives every year and is never fully used.

02The money that has already arrived

No new budget is being asked for. This door says what has to be done to put the fund that already arrives every year onto this work, and it says it for somebody who holds no office.

03What must not be done

A village that decides to act on this reaches within a month for the same three things, and all three are dangerous. A wing that tells a village to act and does not say where to stop is not doing good.

The doors of गण

01The drug-free village stone

One day the village will be given a certificate. It is a zero, and a zero has a ceiling. A village that holds the stone and nothing else is standing exactly where this began, with a stone.

02The one who was the shame

There is one man in this village who can sit with the next household and say it and be believed. And he is the man the village was most ashamed of. Not despite those years. On account of them.

03The next village

The next village in this area will not believe a pamphlet and probably not an officer either. It will believe one thing: a village that has done it, and that comes to the same market.

All four movements are open. And one thing is said as often as the rest: no lists, no naming anybody publicly, no catching sellers, no forcing anybody into a centre, and never an opinion on anybody's medicine. A wing that tells a village to act and does not say where to stop has done harm.

And if you hold an office → the sarpanch, the panchayat, the block and the district
And this is what the household is reading → the family wing, four movements
