Asato Mā

Three times the same verb, गमय, lead. Never away from the darkness. Always from the darkness to the light. Every line has a place it is going.

Restlessness is energy that has not been given a road. The usual advice is to sit on it, and it does not sit. This verse does not ask it to be still. It gives it a direction, three times over, and lets it go.

The Upaniṣad explains its own lines straight after them: the unreal is death, and the real is the deathless. All three lines say that one thing, so all three walk the same road.

It is the position of this whole training in three lines: walking toward, never running from.

Where it comes from: Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad 1.3.28, the pavamāna verses. The Upaniṣad has no ॐ before it and no śānti after it; both are added as it is chanted (Arjun, 8 October 2026).

ॐ असतः मा सत् गमय
तमसः मा ज्योतिः गमय
मृत्योः मा अमृतम् गमय
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः

वाचिक: Said out loud, at the length of one out-breath. The syllables light as you say them. उपांशु: The lips move, the breath carries it, nobody across the room can hear it. The light goes through each line in its colour, as it does aloud. मानस: Nothing is said. The words grow faint, the light still goes through them, and their sense stays, with the breath and the beads. अन्तर्यात्रा: One mālā that goes inwards by itself. The first third aloud, the second in a whisper, the last in the mind. The voice leaves the room without you deciding when.
