The invocation
The closed kāvaḍ. On its front, Gupt’s prayer before he begins.
लेकर तुम्हारा नाम ;

In our English How shall the jewel of my mind be kept safe? There are robbers on the road: desire, anger, intoxication, greed, delusion. But I will go on, Rāma, taking your name. Only keep for me, father, a little forgiveness and a little tenderness.
Gupt names the robbers first: desire, anger, mada, which is intoxication, greed and delusion. He does not say he is above them. They are on the road, and every traveller meets them.
And then he does not ask for strength. He asks for so little: a little forgiveness, a little tenderness, and he will go on. A man who has met the robbers on his road does not need a lecture about them. He needs a little forgiveness and a little tenderness, from the house and from himself, and he will go on.

Heaven. Indra, the king of the gods, has done a great wrong, and is hiding in the waters doing penance. To guard heaven while he is away, the gods have put a mortal king on his throne, Nahuṣ. Indra’s wife Śacī walks by the river at night with her friend.

दगता है अन्तर, सुलगता ज्यों तुष है ;

“नहीं, किन्तु पद में सदैव एक मद है ;

In our English The river of heaven, its sands, its never-ending growth. All is peace; only Indra’s wife is in grief. Her lord has lost heaven and she has lost everything; a mortal sits on his throne. Her friend tells her to take it lightly, gods are gods and men are men. “What change?” Śacī answers. “Everything is just where it was. Only I am not who I was. I am a foreigner in my own country, a prisoner in my own house. My heaven is in someone else’s hands.” Her friend reminds her that Nahuṣ is good, and that the gods chose him. “Yes,” she says, “but there is always an intoxication in high place; a river in flood crosses its banks. Gods stay gods and demons stay demons; man can go either way. I can be careful of demons; it is men I am afraid of. And my husband has gone I do not know where; he too hides his face from me.” “Be patient,” says the friend; “would he ever sit idle?” “If it were a war, I would fight it myself.” Then she rises, burning with her own worth: “What strength can do, Śacī will do. Let anyone show me the way; I will show the going. Come, I am going to the guru.” She bathes, thinks of her husband, and goes, under the thin moonlight.
This is the canto of the woman of the house, and every woman whose husband went into something knows each line of it.
Everything is just where it was. Only I am not who I was. The house is the same house, the courtyard the same, the cot the same. And she is a foreigner in her own country, a prisoner in her own home, while someone else, something else, sits on the throne of it.
And look where her husband is. Not on the throne: hiding in the water, doing penance for what he did, his face turned away from her. He too hides his face from me. A man ashamed does not only leave the house. He hides from the person he most needs.
Then the line that this whole site stands on: gods stay gods and demons stay demons; man can go either way. Nobody is fixed. Not the man who is falling, and not the man who rose. That is why Śacī fears men, and that is why there is hope for them.
And she does not wait to be rescued. Let anyone show me the way; I will show the going. She goes for help, at night, herself.

In our English Nārada’s vīṇā rings in the sky: “Blessed is a man’s striving: even Indra’s throne has worshipped it.” Śacī, lost in thought, does not bow to him. He is not Durvāsā: he is not angry, only sorry. “She is in trouble; how should she be well? There is noise inside her; how should she know what is outside?” He goes to the palace. Nahuṣ rises to meet him, humbly. Nārada: “What is left for you to want?” Nahuṣ: “Not fruit. I am eager to do something.” Nārada praises heaven’s pleasures; Nahuṣ defends the earth: “Is the heart smaller than the head? If there were no sorrow, what would joy be worth? We change, and so we are always new. Sickness, age and death, yes, and also new birth. Heaven is one resting place on our journey.” Nārada laughs: “Stay partial to your earth, but heaven is yours too. People say heaven cannot be had without dying; you reached it in this body.” Then Nahuṣ says what troubles him: “I see to all the work here; and still I count myself alone. It hurts, when I think: does anyone here feel touched by an untouchable? Nobody shows any ill will, and still my pride makes me a rebel.” Nārada: “Ah, a mortal’s weakness. Give it up. The gods themselves have given you their kingdom. Think of your own human body as a temple of the gods.”
Two things in this canto are for the man who has started to rise.
The first is Nārada’s patience with Śacī: there is noise inside her; how should she know what is outside? Someone who does not greet you, does not answer, does not see you, is often not proud or rude. There is too much noise inside.
The second is Nahuṣ himself, and it is the loneliness of the one who rose. He is on the throne of heaven, everyone is kind, and still he counts himself alone, and wonders whether anyone feels touched by something unclean when he passes. Nobody shows any ill will, and still my pride makes me a rebel. Every man who has come back into the family, the village, the work, knows this. Nobody says anything. He feels it anyway, and the feeling makes him prickly.
Nārada’s answer is the body: think of your own human body as a temple of the gods. Not a thing to be ashamed of, not something unclean that others might touch: a temple. That is what the practice on this site is for.

In our English Nahuṣ praises the dance. Urvaśī asks why he looks sad even in heaven. “I was shy, and the work was new. And the people here need no king. Still I must do something somewhere; if not for the gods, then for men. I see how much want there is on earth. My first order will be rain: let the clouds rain jewels too, and give shade.” Urvaśī, begging pardon: “Then people will have food without work. Why would they sweat? They will grow idle. What great man was ever great who never fought an obstacle? The one who lies like a stone is happy and quiet too. ‘Let me do nothing and someone bring me what I want’: such a man will have everyone’s curse. How can one enjoy who has not earned? If the earth is never scorched, it goes cold and rots. Effort can turn even a desert green. Wanted only: wisdom, strength, skill, forgiveness, compassion. Heaven or hell is made by whoever lives there; the same wind carries the smell of both.” Nahuṣ: “You have said my own mind. Effort, effort, effort! But my earth and my people: what did they get from my becoming Indra?” “The earth grew heavier with that glory.” Charmed, he says: “Then you take some work from this body.” “You are our work, made flesh. Come: spring is waiting in the Nandana garden!”
The best words in this poem about work, about effort, about the desert turned green, are spoken here, and they are spoken at the very edge of the slide.
Nahuṣ wanted to rain plenty on the earth with no effort from anyone, and Urvaśī is right to stop him: plenty that falls from the sky without effort makes a man lie like a stone. Anything that brings a man what he wants without his doing anything is that rain. Effort can turn even a desert green. Rajasthan knows this line.
Heaven or hell is made by whoever lives there; the same wind carries the smell of both. Not the place. The one who lives in it.
And then, in the same breath, come, spring is waiting in the garden. The truest words and the first step of the slide stand next to each other. Nobody falls from a bad conversation. They fall from a good one, at the moment it turns.

The pleasures of heaven: how craving grows
The garden of heaven. Nahuṣ gives himself to its pleasures: the music, the dancing, the wine. Then, one morning, he sees Śacī coming up from her bath in the river.

In our English What bird has come into the garden, resting neither night nor day, taking every fruit, leaving it tasted? The more the objects of the senses are enjoyed, the more they grow; all aims dissolve into desire. Once a man has drunk and lost himself, where is his sense of his own and others’? The past is gone; the future we will see when it comes; take the present now, it too will go. Whatever comes after, there must be taste; even an itch feels good when scratched. The king who delighted others was delighted now. Desire woke, and fed, it grew like a river rising. He was not slow to drink. His eyes were full of it; he swayed at every step. Then his half-shut eyes opened: Śacī, coming up from the river. He forgot himself; she was gone and still he saw her. “So this is Indra’s queen. How could I forget? Indra’s queen belongs to whoever is Indra, and I am Indra now. What kind of Indra am I without her?” He tells himself he will ask her pardon for his neglect, and bow before her.
Gupt wrote this canto in 1940, and it is as exact about craving as anything written since.
The more they are enjoyed, the more they grow. Not less: more. Once a man has drunk and lost himself, where is his sense of his own and others’? The past is gone; the future we will see; take the present now. Even an itch feels good when scratched. A man who has lived inside a habit reads these lines and recognises each one, from the inside.
Look at the bird in the first stanza: it never rests, night or day, and takes a taste of every fruit. That is craving itself, and it does not stay on one fruit. In this canto it moves from the music to the wine, and from the wine to a woman who is not his. The object changes. The bird is the same. On this site that is the centre of the circle: every dependence comes to a single point.
And notice how Gupt writes him. Not as a monster. The king who delighted others was delighted now. A good man, given everything, with nothing to do. Gupt does not sneer at him once. Neither will we.

The message: what “man” means
Nahuṣ sends a messenger to Śacī, at her guru’s hermitage, asking her to come to him. She sends back an answer. He hears it.

In our English Afternoon in the hermitage. A messenger comes. “My lord begs pardon, again and again, with shame: desire trapped me in the palace and made me a sinner at your feet. Being kept from serving you is my great punishment. You have abandoned me and yourself. The weight of ruling alone is double; let me have the one who would halve it. Let this head have one place to bow.” Śacī: “Silence. Tell your lord: we gave you our house and our work; shall we not keep even our dharma? A man going on pilgrimage leaves his house with a good servant; take this house so: as a trust, not yours. Give up the sinful wish to be Śacī’s husband.” Nahuṣ, hearing it, is beside himself. “So I am not fit for Indra’s throne? A servant? Heaven is for sale, and I paid for it. I never asked for it; the gods gave it me. She looks at me with contempt, not pride. Women show pride, not contempt. I would bow for a blade of grass. But if I bear this insult, how can I say I am a man? Let there be war in the house; she must come. If I cannot prove myself her husband, I will step down like a coward.”
Read his message twice. It is a real apology: desire trapped me; I am a sinner at your feet. And in the same breath it is a demand: send me what I want. Every house has heard that message. I am sorry, and then, now give.
Śacī’s answer is the one this site gives the man who has been handed the house: take it as a trust. What the family gives a man, its money, its keys, its name, is not his to spend. It was given to keep.
Then hear what the word “man” means to him in this canto: if I bear this insult, how can I say I am a man? Pride, honour, not bearing a slight: in western Rajasthan, as everywhere, men have drunk for that word, and fought for it, and broken their houses for it. Remember it. At the end of the poem he says I am a man once more, and it will mean something else entirely.

In our English Bṛhaspati opens the council: “God has one word for the soul: never sit back, at ease.” Śacī, angry: “Why did you make him king? Was there no one among you? A mortal is master of my heaven, a hard ascetic but a cruel, lustful man.” Varuṇa answers her gently: “Whatever he is now, he was worthy then. He rose by his own steadiness in dharma. Even the thunderbolt cannot cut a deed. Shall we become like men, who split the earth into pieces, who could not make one language, who say ‘my kingdom, my country, my birthplace’ and fight one another, shut inside circles?” Śacī, in tears: “Everything is gone, even my shame. I will go to Nahuṣ alone; if I cannot fight I will fall at his feet. Or let the sages carry him: they fed this snake; let them bring him on their shoulders as heaven’s bridegroom.” Bṛhaspati: “Enough. That is it. Let the sages carry the new bridegroom’s palanquin.”
This is the village, the people around the man, deciding what to do about him. And Gupt does not make them all wise.
Some of them are angry: a cruel, lustful man. One of them is fair: whatever he is now, he was worthy then. Hold on to Varuṇa’s sentence. A man is not cancelled by what he has become. What he was is still true.
Varuṇa also says the sharpest thing in the poem about the circle: men fight one another, shut inside circles, my village, my caste, my country. That is the circle of this site, ring after ring.
And then the council does what councils do. It sets a trap: let him make the sages carry him, and he will fall. It works. Nobody in this canto is innocent: not Indra, who hid after murder; not the gods, who made a trap; not Nahuṣ. Everyone has fallen somewhere. That is why nobody here may stand in judgment, and why the next canto ends the way it does.

चलना मुझे है, बस अन्त तक चलना ;

In our English “Śacī says: come for her; let the sages carry your palanquin.” Nahuṣ is charmed: “What a proud woman! Kings may punish even sages; I once made bandits carry sages, let sages carry me now, for her.” The sages agree to bear this one injustice. He rides drunk with it; they lag under the weight; he grows impatient: “Faster, faster!” They keep shifting their shoulders; he stamps in anger; his foot strikes a sage. The seven sages blaze: “Shall we carry you, hear you, and take your kicks too? That was no foot, it was a snake. Fall, wretch, and become a snake yourself.” He goes pale at the curse, as if the breath-drinking snake had drunk his breath and woken him. He clutches the palanquin’s pole like a drowning man a straw, and stares at nothing. Then, like a lamp going out, he starts: “Trouble is trouble; but why this fear? Is this not another making of me, not only an ending?” The proud man pulls his limbs together: “It was a dream; good that it broke. Hard, hard truth; still I take it on my head. Be at peace, great sages; I accept your curse. You think a snake bit you. Did a snake not bite me too, at a touch of the foot? I admit it, I erred, I am sorry. Fallen from heaven, but into the lap of the earth; whatever birth one is in, there is joy in it. Time will not sit still with me, and poison will get into that life. Still, those who take the trouble to search will find nectar hidden even in poison. I admit it: I hid behind my rights; the root was desire. I ask Śacī’s open pardon. I admit I forgot Nārada’s word; the demon got into my own heart. I admit everything. I do not admit defeat. Today heaven is something I have used and left. Tomorrow I will show you what is beyond it. The body may be whoever’s; the mind and the soul are mine. I do not care whether outside it is light or dark. I have to walk, to the very end. Falling is not what matters; what matters is standing up. Can someone fall who never rose? It was I who rose, and it is I who fall now. And still I will rise, and go on, and climb, because I am a man. And I am not to rise alone, empty-handed: let what I worship rise higher with me.”
Here is the whole of it, in one canto.
He falls at the exact moment he makes others carry him. The kāvaḍ, remember, is what is carried on the shoulder, and it began with a son who carried his blind parents out of love. Nahuṣ makes the old sages carry him out of desire, and cannot even wait for them. Faster, faster. That is the fall: not the drinking, not the wanting, but the moment a man makes others carry him and kicks them for being slow.
The curse comes, and Gupt reaches for an image from Marwar: the snake that sits by a sleeping man, drinks his breath, and wakes him with a blow of its tail, so that he wakes crying it drank me. Many a man in western Rajasthan has woken like that, and many a house.
And then, look at what he does. He does not blame the sages. He does not blame Śacī, or the gods who set the trap, though they did. He says I erred, I am sorry, the root was desire, the demon got into my own heart. Not an enemy outside. His own heart. And with all of it admitted, one thing he will not admit: I admit everything. I do not admit defeat.
Falling is not what matters; what matters is standing up. Can someone fall who never rose? It was I who rose. The fall is proof that he rose. Nothing was lost; the height he fell from was his.
And now hear the word “man” again. In the last canto it meant I will not bear an insult. Here it means I will rise again. The same word, turned.
Behind the last door
The last pair of doors opens. Behind it, as in many kāvaḍs, Rāma, with Lakṣmaṇa and Sītā.
The poem began with a prayer: there are robbers on the road; but I will go on, Rāma, taking your name. It ends with a fallen man standing up. And behind the last door, at the back of the box, is the one the prayer was made to.
Every door you opened was a threshold. Śacī’s grief, the loneliness on the throne, the true words at the edge, the bird that never rests, the message, the trap, the fall. None of them was the end. Each was a door, and the last one opens onto the god.
Before you close the box, notice one thing about yourself. Not what you did. Whether, today, there was a moment you let someone carry you and were impatient with them, and whether there was a moment you carried someone. Only notice. That is enough for one night.
The Hindi verse is Maithilīśaraṇ Gupt’s, Nahuṣ, read in the Sahitya Sadan printing (Chirgaon, Jhansi, ninth printing, saṃvat 2011); page numbers are that printing’s. The English of Gupt’s lines, and everything else on this page, is ours. The kāvaḍ is drawn after the kāvaḍs of Bassi.
