Āditya Hṛdayam
आदित्यहृदयम्
A hymn handed to Rama when he was exhausted on the field and could not see the end of it.
Why this one
Read the first verse before you read anything else. Rama is worn out in the middle of the battle, sitting with his own thoughts, and Ravana is standing in front of him ready to go again. That is the situation the stotra is given in. Not a temple, not a morning, not a man at peace. A man who is tired and cannot see the end of it.
Agastya does not take the enemy away. He does not say it will be over soon. He gives him something to say, and Rama says it, and then he picks up his bow and goes back to the same fight.
The fifth verse names what it is for: चिन्ताशोकप्रशमनम्, the stilling of worry and grief. Not their removal. Their stilling, so that a man can act. Anybody who has lain awake at four in the morning with the same thought going round knows the difference between a worry ending and a worry going quiet enough to let him stand up.
It is long, and the length is the point. By the tenth verse the mouth is full and the mind has nowhere else to be. That is what a long recitation does for a man whose thinking will not stop, and it is a mercy older than any of us.
वाचिक: Said out loud, a line to a breath. The syllables light as you say them. उपांशु: The lips move and nobody across the room hears it. The text stays on the screen and stops moving. मानस: Nothing said, nothing shown. The breath and the place. अन्तर्यात्रा: The first third aloud, the second whispered, the last in the mind. Over a stotra this long the voice goes inward by itself; this simply agrees with it.
How to say it
The traditional three, and the order is a withdrawal inwards rather than a ladder. Nothing is locked.
You can stop anywhere. The page remembers the verse you reached, on this device only, and offers it when you come back.
