Om Namo Bhagavate
अद्भुत · Overwhelmed, in wonder
ॐ नमो भगवते
The Mother, on ॐ नमो भगवते · Mother's Agenda, vol. 6, 19 February 1965
The first word represents: the supreme invocation, the invocation to the Supreme. The second word represents: total self-giving; perfect surrender. The third word represents: the aspiration, what the manifestation must become—Divine.
Why this one
Wonder is the state in which something is too large to take in. The hands go up before anybody tells them to, and then the head goes down. This mantra has both, in that order, and then a third thing.
It is the Mother's own mantra, and what she said its three words represent is given above, exactly as she wrote it.
The āsana before it has the same shape: the arms raised and held as long as they will stay, and the rest after it a bow, the forehead on the ground.
Where it comes from: The Mother's mantra. Her note on its three words is in Mother's Agenda, vol. 6, 19 February 1965. Arjun, 8 October 2026: the mantra for wonder is ॐ नमो भगवते alone, with her translation exactly; it replaces the longer form.
Mother's Agenda, vol. 6, 19 February 1965: the note she wrote and gave to Satprem (Institut de Recherches Évolutives, Paris). Not in the Collected Works of the Mother. Checked word for word against the Ashram's page (motherandsriaurobindo.in, The Mother's mantra), 8 October 2026.
Padaccheda, checked against the Mother's note, Mother's Agenda, vol. 6, 19 February 1965.
ॐ नमः भगवते
वाचिक: Said out loud, at the length of one out-breath. The syllables light as you say them. उपांशु: The lips move, the breath carries it, nobody across the room can hear it. The light goes through each line in its colour, as it does aloud. मानस: Nothing is said. The words grow faint, the light still goes through them, and their sense stays, with the breath and the beads. अन्तर्यात्रा: One mālā that goes inwards by itself. The first third aloud, the second in a whisper, the last in the mind. The voice leaves the room without you deciding when.
How many
One hundred and eight is the usual count, and there is no need to start there. Eleven is a real japa.
How to say it
The traditional order, and it is a withdrawal inwards rather than a set of levels. Nothing here is locked. Stand on whichever step you are on today.
