The idea beneath the practice

Becoming Jyotirgana

Why we stopped treating people as patients and started training them as protectors.

From within

What you are.

Everywhere else this site tells you what to do. This page does not. It is here for the other question, which nobody in this matter has ever asked you.

Where this comes from

Seven things, each of which this site already acts on without ever having said it. Beside each one is the passage that says it far better than we can, from two works by Sri Aurobindo: The Human Cycle and The Ideal of Human Unity.

Nothing here is quoted to give this site an authority. It is the other way round. You have already met every one of these on some other page, in plain speech, without being told where it came from. This is where it came from.

Read slowly. There is nothing to finish.

One

Everything ever done about this was done to you from outside

The law. The lock on the cupboard. The counting of the money. The watching at the door. The shame in the lane, which is the oldest instrument of all.

Not one of them ever reached the place where this actually happens. They could not. They were all working on the outside of a man, and the thing they were working on is not out there.

There is a growing attempt to understand him, to make allowance for his heredity, environment and inner deficiencies and to change him from within rather than crush him from without.
Sri Aurobindo, The Human Cycle, Chapter V

Written between 1916 and 1918, of what the most advanced societies were then beginning to do with the man they had until that moment only punished. The man who wrote it had himself been held for a year in a prison cell.

And you have already met this

It is the reason there is no register on this site, no count, no certificate and no streak to break. Every one of those works on the outside of a man.

You have been counted, and you are not a number

A case. A beneficiary. A line in a survey. One of so many in a district, reported upward every quarter.

None of that is a lie. All of it is small. A man can be counted and the counting will still have missed the only thing about him that matters.

He is not merely a member of a human pack, hive or ant-hill; he is something in himself, a soul, a being, who has to fulfil his own individual truth and law as well as his natural or his assigned part in the truth and law of the collective existence.
Sri Aurobindo, The Human Cycle, Chapter II
And you have already met this

It is why the measure on this site is never how many days you did not use. It is whether you have something this year that you did not have last year.

You and the house were never two things

Every arrangement anybody has offered you asks the same question. Who gives way. You, or them.

And whichever way it is answered, somebody is giving something up, and an arrangement in which somebody gives something up lasts exactly as long as the strength stays even.

By strife one can only arrive at an adjustment of the two opposite demands, not at a stable harmony, a compromise between two conflicting egoisms and not the fusing of them into each other.
Sri Aurobindo, The Ideal of Human Unity, Chapter III

The same chapter says that the size of the collectivity makes no difference to the question. It was the family, the tribe, the city; it became the clan, the caste, the class; it is now the nation, and tomorrow it may be all mankind. The question stands in the same place at every one of those scales. Which is why this site goes outward through exactly those doors and finds the same thing behind each of them.

And you have already met this

It is why the mat in that room is laid out for everybody, and why nobody in it says they are doing it for you. Nothing is being divided there. One thing is being done, and each person is doing it for their own reason.

What is the same everywhere is not alive

When this reaches somebody with a budget, they will ask that it be made identical in every village. They will ask in good faith. Sameness can be counted, and what can be counted can be reported.

And it is the surest way to kill it, for a reason older than any scheme.

In Matter uniformity is the sign of the group; free variation and individual development progress with the growth of Life and Mind.
Sri Aurobindo, The Ideal of Human Unity, Chapter III

Sameness is what dead matter does. Variation is the mark of the living. A thing made uniform has not been organised. It has been moved one step back down.

And you have already met this

It is why the nine groups and their counts must be identical everywhere, and why the hour, the ground, who opens it and what each person came for must never be. The protocol is the same. The life is various.

This is how every scheme that came before you died

Not through anybody's laziness and not for want of money. They die the same death and it has a shape.

Something living is done. A way of doing it forms, which is right, because that is how it reaches a second person. Then the way becomes the rule, and then completing the rule becomes the work, and by then nobody remembers what the work was for.

The conventional stage of human society is born when the external supports, the outward expressions of the spirit or the ideal become more important than the ideal, the body or even the clothes more important than the person.
Sri Aurobindo, The Human Cycle, Chapter I

He is describing the whole of a civilisation over centuries. It happens to a village programme in about a year, and by exactly the same steps. The register becomes more important than the practice; then the man is known by which list he is on rather than by what he did this morning.

And you have already met this

It is why the stone at the turning of a village, saying it is now free of this, is not the aim here and is in some ways a danger. After it is set, a village stops saying that anybody still has the trouble.

Turning inward is right, and there is one way it goes wrong

After the rules have failed and the revolt against the rules has failed, what is left is to turn inward and ask what you actually are. That turn is the whole of this site.

And it goes wrong in one particular way, and the way is common, and it can happen to a man or to a movement with a name.

She had mistaken her vital ego for herself; she had sought for her soul and found only her force.
Sri Aurobindo, The Human Cycle, Chapter IV

He is writing about a nation. The sentence does not care about the scale. A man who goes inward and comes back more certain has found his force. A man who goes inward and comes back more open has found something else. That is the only test, and it can be seen from outside.

And you have already met this

It is why this site says, of itself, that Jyotirgana is not a thing a person belongs to but a thing a person does; and why the test we put to everybody is put to us too.

A department can make this possible. It cannot do it

Money, land, a room, an instructor, and the law that stops treating you as a criminal: only a State can give those, and it has given them, and you should go and take every one of them.

And there it stops. A machinery has never sat down beside anybody.

The State idea, the small or the vast living machine, and the human idea, the more and more distinct and luminous Person, the increasing God, stand in perpetual opposition.
Sri Aurobindo, The Ideal of Human Unity, Chapter III

The next chapter is harder still: what is demanded in the name of the good of all is in practice a subordination to a collective egoism, and there is no guarantee that those who speak for it represent the best mind of a people or its highest instincts. That is not a reason to ask a State for nothing. It is a reason to know exactly what to ask it for.

And you have already met this

It is why the professional entrance asks a department for space, money, protection and a route, and hands it nothing that a machinery would turn into a register.

And the name of this page

It is not ours. It is four words out of the fifth chapter of The Human Cycle, describing what the most advanced societies of that hour were beginning to attempt with the man they had until then only punished: to change him from within rather than crush him from without. That is what this whole site is, and somebody had already written it down a hundred and ten years ago.

On the reading

The Human Cycle, chapters one to six, and The Ideal of Human Unity, chapters three and four, were read in the original for this page. Not the whole of either work. Every passage here is from a chapter that was read, and none is taken from a summary. Both works are long out of copyright in India and are freely available in full.
