The idea beneath the practice

Becoming Jyotirgana

Why we stopped treating people as patients and started training them as protectors.

Family

The house trains.

This wing is for everybody in the room: the wife, the mother, the father, the brother, the child, the old man in the corner, and him. Not as carers of a patient. As a household with a practice in it.

Every door here opens three times

One · Two · All
Onewhat one person can do alone tonight, telling nobody
Twowhat happens between two people
Alland now the whole house, at one hour
There is no patient in this house.

Everywhere else a family is asked to support a treatment. Here the family does it, alongside him, each of them for a reason of their own. That one change removes the thing no amount of goodwill could remove: that he is watched while he practises in his own home. The whole apparatus is one hour, one corner, ten minutes, and the rule that nobody says they are doing it for him.

The doors of देहरी

01What this house has been doing

You have not been sitting idle. You watched, you counted, you hid things, you quarrelled, and then you went quiet. You worked all of it out alone, at night, because nobody ever told you anything.

02Watching, and standing guard

Standing guard is a form of love, and it is the most exhausting work in the house. This door is about what the guard costs, who pays it, and what can be put in its place that is not weaker than it.

03And how are you

In all these years nobody has asked you this question. This door is that question, and behind it is a measured finding: the family members' own state improves whether or not the man ever enters treatment.

The doors of आँगन

01The one who shares his bed and his arithmetic

There is one person in this house who knows the most and is asked the least. Who lies awake listening to how the breathing is going, and gets up in the morning in front of everybody as though nothing had happened.

02Those who came before him, and those who came beside him

The mother, who never gave up hope and whom the whole village watches for exactly that. The father, with whom the speaking stopped and neither of them knows when. And the brothers and sisters, carrying a mark they did not earn.

03The child who is watching

There is one person in this room with the least power and the longest future. This page is not about her. It is written to her, and it asks the grown-ups of the house to let her read it.

The doors of संग

01One mat

Everywhere else the family is asked to support the treatment. Here the family does it, alongside him, each for their own reasons. And that removes at a stroke the thing no amount of goodwill could remove.

02The one hour

This door is practical and there is nothing philosophical in it. Which hour, which room, who does what, what the old do, what the unwell do, and what happens on the day nobody comes.

03When that day comes

In every house the day comes when he uses again. What this house does in the hour after it decides the next two years. And that hour is either decided in advance or it is decided in a rage.

The doors of घराना

01What a gharana is

In music a gharana is not a family that happened to produce one great performer. It is a household in which a discipline lives, is done daily, and is handed on. In it there is no performer and there is no audience.

02What the child carries forward

What passes out of a house is not a story. It is a manner. A child does not carry what happened in this house; a child carries what this house did when it happened. And that choice is being made this morning.

03The next house

There is another house in this village that is where this house was some years ago. Its people will not believe a government pamphlet. They will believe one thing only: a house that has done it.

All four movements are open. Nothing here is behind a payment, nothing is kept, and none of it needs a signal once the site is on one phone in the house.

And this is what he is reading → the individual wing, four movements
And when it goes past your own door → the family, the peer, the village and the district
