Morning
Udara · on an empty stomach, the belly worked with the breath out
Standing bent forward at sixty degrees, hands on the hips. Breathe all the way out through the nose, and without breathing in work the belly in and out quickly. Then breathe in slowly.
To begin with the module gives five times. While opium is still being taken, keep the held-out breath short, to comfort, never to the limit of endurance.
Only on an empty stomach. Not with an ulcer in the stomach or a hernia. The first time in the camp, with a teacher. There are no photographs of it yet; it is in words, in the module's own description.
Kapālabhāti
On an empty stomach. Read the screen on its page first, then begin at fifteen strokes a minute.
Never stretch the silence after; while opium is still being taken, let it stay short.
OpenThe midday meal
Slowly, and a little less
Eat sitting, and slowly. The same soup drunk in one minute rather than four brought more nausea.
Stop before the stomach is full. A full stomach presses upward.
The belly's breath, on a slope
Fold a blanket two or three times, or take two pillows, and lie back on it so that the head and chest stay raised and the slope begins at the waist. Not a pillow under the head alone.
One hand on the belly. In through the nose, the belly rises under the hand; out, it settles by itself. Hold nowhere, push nowhere.
Five minutes. If sleep comes, turn on to the left side, not the right.
Evening
After the evening meal, a slow walk
The module's own order: the evening meal eaten mindfully, then a quiet walk. Slow steps, slow enough to talk.
A slow walk emptied the stomach sooner; no hard effort straight after food. A walk, not a run.
At night, before sleep
The complete breath, then sleep on the left side
Lie down only two or three hours after the last meal. On the back, one hand on the belly, one on the chest. Fill from the bottom, empty from the top, the out-breath long. Hold nowhere.
Ten breaths, then turn on to the left side, and sleep.
At home
The bed, tobacco, and the doctor
If the burning comes at night, raise the head end of the bed, bricks under its legs, as the trials did.
Bidi and tobacco loosen the inner door and lower the saliva that washes acid back down.
Black stool, vomiting blood, food that sticks and will not go down, weight falling for no reason, or pressure in the chest with sweat: a doctor the same day. A medicine the doctor gave stays; the breath goes beside it, not in its place.
Why this order
The drug quiets the nerves in the wall of the gullet and the stomach that open their doors, and the stomach empties slowly; that hold is in the gut wall, and when the drug was blocked the stomach emptied almost as before. Around the gullet is the diaphragm's ring, the muscle of the breath: the belly breath after food tightened it and cut the reflux after the meal, and daily practice lowered the acid within weeks. Lying flat straight after food and lying on the right side raise it; the head raised lowers it.
Before you begin
Stay well within what is comfortable. If anything hurts, stop. This supports treatment and does not replace it; anybody on buprenorphine or methadone stays on it.
While opium is still being taken, keep every breath hold short.
